What GHIC is for
The UK Global Health Insurance Card gives eligible UK residents access to medically necessary state healthcare during temporary stays in participating countries, under the same basis as people insured in that country. That can mean treatment is free or that a local patient contribution still applies.
Check the destination-specific rules before travel because coverage is tied to the public healthcare system and not every country or territory is identical.
What GHIC is not designed to cover
How to use both intelligently
Do not treat the choice as “GHIC or travel insurance.” For an eligible traveler, GHIC can be useful healthcare access while a travel policy can address the financial risks outside that system. When comparing policies, disclose information accurately and read how the insurer expects you to use GHIC or public treatment where available.
- Carry a valid GHIC or eligible EHIC if you can use one.
- Compare medical repatriation and emergency assistance.
- Match cancellation cover to the money genuinely at risk.
- Check activities, age limits and pre-existing-condition wording.
When the difference matters most
The gap becomes more important on expensive trips, cruises, ski holidays, long stays or itineraries with many prepaid bookings. A public healthcare card may help with treatment, but it cannot recover every financial loss created by an interrupted trip.
