Start with GHIC or EHIC—then look for the gaps
A UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC), or a valid UK-issued EHIC where it remains eligible, can help with medically necessary state healthcare during temporary stays in covered European countries. Access follows the rules of the country you are visiting, so treatment may not always be free.
That healthcare access is useful, but it is not the same product as travel insurance. It does not replace cover for risks such as medical repatriation to the UK, private treatment, cancellation, baggage or many transport disruptions.
What to compare for a Europe trip from the UK
Single-trip or annual European cover?
If you expect only one holiday, a single-trip policy can be the simpler comparison. Frequent travelers may prefer an annual policy, but the annual label does not guarantee every trip fits. Check the maximum duration per trip, destination region, age limits and activity restrictions.
- Compare the maximum length of each trip.
- Check whether all European destinations on your itinerary are included.
- Read age limits and pre-existing-condition wording.
- Do not assume winter sports or cruise cover is automatic.
Why destination details still matter
A weekend in Paris, a two-week Spanish road trip and a ski holiday in the Alps create different risks. Use the country guides to refine your checklist around transport, islands, mountains and activities.
Start with the places you are actually visiting.
Browse Europe guidesFrequently asked questions
Is GHIC the same as travel insurance?
No. GHIC can help with eligible state healthcare in covered countries, but it does not replace travel insurance for repatriation, cancellation, baggage and other travel risks.
Does GHIC cover private hospitals?
GHIC is designed around state-provided healthcare under the local system. Do not assume private care is covered; check the rules for your destination and your travel-insurance policy.
Should I buy annual Europe travel insurance?
It can suit frequent travelers, but check maximum trip length, age limits, destination definitions, activities and pre-existing-condition rules before comparing it with single-trip cover.
