Schengen visa rejected: can you get a travel insurance refund?

If your Schengen visa application is refused, you may no longer need the travel medical insurance bought for your trip. But the answer to “can I get a Schengen visa insurance refund?” depends on the provider's policy and the timing of your request — not simply on the visa decision.

Quick answer: insurance refund after visa refusal

A refund may be possible — but it is not automatic

Some travel medical insurance providers offer a refund if a Schengen visa is formally refused, especially when the trip has not started and no claim has been made. Others apply strict cancellation windows or non-refundable terms. Request the rule in writing before buying.

Do not confuse a refund of the insurance premium with reimbursement for flight or hotel cancellation or with the visa application fee. They are three separate questions.

What might be refundable if your Schengen visa is rejected?

Travel medical insurance premiumPotentially refundable if the insurer's terms permit it. You may need the official refusal notice, certificate and payment proof.
Schengen visa application feeNot refundable after refusal under the standard Schengen visa application rules.
Visa centre service chargesCheck the specific service provider's terms; do not assume these fees are refundable.
Flights and accommodationAirline, hotel or booking-site cancellation rules apply. Travel insurance covers visa refusal only if the relevant benefit explicitly says it does.
Trip cancellation insuranceA separate insured cancellation reason may apply if stated in the policy; denial of a visa is not automatically insured.

Schengen visa insurance: what consulates generally require

Under Article 15 of the EU Visa Code, a short-stay Schengen visa application generally requires appropriate travel medical insurance that covers urgent medical treatment, emergency hospitalisation and medical repatriation, including in the event of death. Cover must usually be valid across the Member States for the intended stay and offer at least €30,000.

Some application categories have exceptions or additional documentation rules. A multiple-entry applicant normally needs proof of insurance for the first intended visit and must understand that later stays also need cover.

How to request an insurance refund if your visa is refused

  • Read your cancellation conditions — look for “visa refusal”, “visa rejection”, cooling-off rights, start date and non-refundable fees.
  • Contact the insurer or seller directly as soon as you receive the official refusal; use the refund channel specified in the policy.
  • Prepare the documents: refusal letter, policy certificate number, purchase confirmation, applicant name and trip dates.
  • Ask for written confirmation of whether the premium is refundable, the amount and any processing conditions.
  • Keep records of requests, ticket numbers and responses. Ask for the relevant contractual clause if the refund is declined.

Do not submit a false refusal letter or invent a reason for cancellation. Ask the provider to explain any alternative cancellation rights that apply under the contract and local consumer law.

An example: Indian traveler applying for a Schengen visa

Before buying

A resident of India plans a 14-day holiday in Italy and France. They compare Schengen-compliant medical insurance and ask whether a formal visa refusal permits a premium refund.

Visa refused before departure

The applicant receives an official rejection letter. They contact the insurer with the refusal notice and request cancellation under the policy's visa-refusal clause, if any.

What happens next

If the insurer's contract allows a refund and conditions are met, it may reimburse the eligible premium. The visa fee remains non-refundable; flights and hotels follow their own cancellation rules.

This is an illustrative example, not a guarantee of eligibility. A different insurer, purchase date or policy start date can produce a different result.

What if the visa is delayed rather than refused?

A pending application or late appointment is not the same as a formal visa refusal. Many refund provisions require an official refusal notice, so a delayed decision may not qualify. Ask the provider about postponing the policy start date or changing the travel dates before the original trip begins.

The European Commission advises applicants to submit short-stay Schengen applications sufficiently early. Official guidance generally permits application no earlier than six months and normally at least 15 calendar days before the planned trip; actual appointment availability and processing can vary.

Does travel insurance pay for flights after a visa rejection?

Ordinary travel medical insurance is designed for medical emergencies during a covered trip, not automatically for a refused visa. Trip cancellation products may cover named reasons for cancellation, but a visa refusal must be expressly listed if you want that protection. An add-on titled “cancellation” does not prove rejection is covered.

Before booking flightsCheck whether tickets and hotels are refundable or flexible in case of visa refusal.
Before insurance purchaseAsk: “Does this contract refund the premium on a formal Schengen visa refusal? What proof and deadline apply?”
If you need broader cancellation coverAsk separately whether the plan reimburses non-refundable trip costs specifically when a visa is refused.

  • The medical coverage limit is at least €30,000, subject to consular rules.
  • You have saved the insurer's visa refusal refund terms and a copy of the certificate.
  • You understand whether the policy can be cancelled or changed before coverage starts.
  • You separately review visa-centre charges, flight refunds and trip cancellation conditions.

Review the Schengen insurance requirements first, then compare policy terms for your nationality, residence and itinerary.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a refund of Schengen travel insurance after visa rejection?

Possibly. Some insurers permit a refund on documented visa refusal, often subject to deadlines and the policy not having started. Other contracts do not. Check the exact cancellation terms.

Is the Schengen visa application fee refunded after refusal?

No. The official Schengen visa application form states that the visa fee is not refunded if the application is refused.

Is visa refusal covered by regular trip cancellation insurance?

Not automatically. A claim for non-refundable flights or hotels requires specific covered-reason wording; visa refusal is often excluded unless expressly included.

Can I request a refund after insurance coverage has started?

Some policies restrict or refuse refunds once cover has commenced or a claim has been made. Ask the provider immediately and read the terms.

How much Schengen medical insurance coverage is required?

Generally at least €30,000 for urgent medical care, hospitalisation and medical repatriation, valid in all relevant Schengen states for the intended stay. Confirm consular requirements.
